HELP!! !!.I just got done replacing the calipers and brake pads. bled the entire system but I have to press the brake 4 times before is starts to brake. Am I missing a step?

You probably still have air in the system. Did the reservoir run out of fluid while you were changing the calipers? If so I would gravity flow the system first. Then do a regular bleed, just to be sure all the air is out.

That's a very very good idea. I'll make to try that later today. And what about the clutch to?

Tell us what problem your haveing with your clutch. Give some information about your vechicle, year make ,etc. You could possibly have a bad master cylinder for your brake problem.

As said above rebleed your brakes. You havnt stated what problems you are having with the clutch. What year cj7 is this?

Everything was working just fine before me and my uncle started working on it. Brakes worked well, and the clutch was firm but now it's really spongy

What did you and your uncle do while you was working on it?

Most of the newer replacement clutch kits come with a diaphragm type pressure plate, which makes the clutch pedal feel softer. The older type clutches that use three levers on the pressure plate are a lot harder to engage.

We bled the brakes, we changed the calipers with the pads to. But some how the clutch went soft idk how did? And thanks for the info.

So you guys replaced the brakes. Not the clutch?

Yes sir. I just got done letting all the air out letting it flow through. Idk if there's time to take it out for a drive.

Ok, I thought you guys replaced the clutch also. I don't see how a brake job would effect the clutch. Let us know how the test drive goes.

Did you bleed your brakes by letting them gravity bleed? or did you have someone pump the pedel and hold it down while you bled the brakes, your post before your last kinda sounded like you did. I know people who used to bleed their brakes by gravity, but I have never had any luck with it. If you gravity bled your and they are still soft, I would have someone pump the pedel so you can bleed them right. Hows the clutch feel now?

I have never heard of gravity bleeding of breaks, could someone tell me how this is supposed to work. It sounds like something that is like a squeege sharpener or sky hook.

Like I said I have not had any luck with it. A friend who has a blacktoping business told me about it awhile back. I used to do it with his truck years back, he dont work on his trucks anymore so he dont do it anymore. but he said something like, you hook everything up and crack open the bleeder valve and hang the caliper up on the frame or something and let it sit, he said sometimes over night, and gravity fills the caliper and forces the air out of the system. Sounded goofy to me and Like I said I have not had any luck with it and have asked around about it and people actually did this and they say it worked. I have never heard of it either until recently.

Ok when I say gravity bleed, I mean after the breaks are reassembled, you open the bleeder valves until the brake fluid starts to flow out. There is no hanging of calipers and it doesn't take all night! By doing this you remove most of the air in the system and I also said to do a standard bleed (pump and hold) after you gravity flow the system. It saves a lot of time and brake fluid.
