I need help quick, have starter all apart

I have taken my starter apart to put a new starter gear in it.. I have taken some things apart that i should not of but i have gotten them back together..

my issue is, i have about a 2 to 3 inch black spring left, and i do not know where it goes,, i presume near or on the starter gear but where... ???

If anyone can help,, please do so..
