Thought I would share this in the YJ forum since they have vacuum disconnects too, right?
A Po$ilock alternative
total cost of parts: about $20
I needed a way to disconnect my front axle when on the road but didn't want to wait for the vacuum to buildup to engage, also by doing this I gained 2LO capability
I have a basic How-to with many pics at http://home.earthlink.net/~stevenschreiber/cabledis.htm
other reasons this setup may be useful is if you have a welded front diff you can unlock it on the road and on turns in 4wd, or if you have an older jeep with the crappy front driveshaft and replaced it with a single carden which doesn't like the road too much, I can just connect the front axle as I enter the trail
also from the forums I've noticed problems with the older t-cases of this year grinding when engaging and occasionally when I pulled it into 4wd it would just act like it was in neutral and I would have to shut it off and restart, having the front axle locked (I previously had the washer mod) significantly reduced this problem, the driveshaft all but eliminated it (works flawlessly 95% of the time)
let me know what you think
