Home grown safari rack - check it out....

Graewolf,

I like the roof rack!!!

I am picturing Marlin Perkins and me in our khakis, sitting in the roof rack atop your GC.
We are preparing to lasso a galloping zebra while you expertly drive across the savanna.

Very cool!!

I like it, lite, yet robust, clean lines. I´m impressed.
I´d cut a piece of waterproof plywood, to fit in the bottom, cut to contact as much of the base as possible. Distibute the wieght, more evenly and probably double the overall strength, with just a little more wieght. You cold probably, bolt some tie downs, on the plywood so you wouldn´t, stress (bow the plastic pipe). A couple of handfulls of 3/16 " bolts, 3/4" washers and cap nuts (preferably in stainless). Cut a curve in a peice of 2X4 to match the curve of the pipe, put a washer between the two pieces of wood, wack it with a hammer. The washers will fit the curve of the pipe and look a lot cleaner.
Just a couple of thoughts. I really like how your project turned out.

Stolen Jeep :(

looks nice, how much weight do you think it will hold??

I would take it off of the cross bars and attach it directly to the lower bars. The cross bars are not very strong.

It'll probably hold more weight than the roof can handle... i set 3 pipes side by side with 3' support span (same as the roof rack is set to, i stood on them and it flexed less than 1/2".... I figure i can load about 300 pounds on it with no trouble at all. It will definitely handle anything that I decide to put up there. I am thinking of hitting the juknyard and getting another cross beam to fit the roof rack.. then i'l have 3 supporting it (not that I think its all that necessary, i doubt that i'll load more than 200lb on it max). I'm gonna add either some plywood, or some of that steel mesh that they use for the landscape trailer decks (if I can find any). sometime in the next 2 weeks it gets a few coats of black paint.. Its gonna look really sweet when I mount a set of 6x9 KC offroad lights to the front of it...:)

Anyone here have a pet snake?

KC lights will definately make it look awesome, kinda makes me wish i had a jeep that i could mount something like that on

Rack looks great. Good job and once you paint it black you will never know that it is PVC. Some lights mounted on it would be way cool too

That's it truly AWESOME!!! PVC is some tough tough stuff!!

That PVC is most certainly stronger then your stock rack rails. Paint it black and post the new pics!!

(The mind is whirling now)
