I am debating on which is the easiest and cheapest way to get more power and sound from my 4.0L. I am thinking about stroking and using the crank and rods from a 4.2L . Or my other option is to use high compression pistons with a cam on a stock 4.0L. Which of the two ideas would be chearest, easiest, and less of an aggravation? Also do you have to bore the cylinders when you stroke an engine. Think jeep is going to be my daily driver, its got 33's and a 6 inch lift if that helps any.
thanks

you don't have to bore it if you stroke it... a stroked 4.0 with the new crank would be 4.5 without boring it....

but... if you are replacing the pistons, and if you have the motor out, you might as well bore it anyway... get some more horses that way... and... if you're ripping into the engine, that crank is not really hard to replace

Once you start to modify the motor you will be putting alot more stress on the moving parts.bearing, journels ect, ect. Depending on how far you go in modifing it. Increase crompression puts alot of stress on the valve train and Crank. There isnt an exact page that says you do this you loose this many miles.
But any engine mods changes the basic engine balance that it was orginaly designed for. Some in line 6's get 300K + others dies less.
The stock4.0 prvides enough power for the frame weight. try adding a better air delivery system and maybe an after market exhaust. then look if it runs better.

A philosophy that us muslcecar guys go by... is that if you build it, you run it... if you break it, you improve it.. and when there are no more possibilities to improve it, then that is when you retire it, or start over... you can start with no overbore, then if you have to get into there again to work on it... bore it then... a motor, as long as the block is good, will last forever as long as you know how to replace the parts

But as far as high compression pistons, would they make a big difference in a 4.0L. I would prefer to have the compression around 10.1. I feel that would be godd enough for a daily driver but i dont know the power that would give me over stock. If anyone knows where i can get some high compression pistons please let me know b\c i cant find crap. I think just putting in high compression pistons would be a hell of alot easier than stroking and engine. Please tell me what u guys think!

actually... replacing the pistons, and stroking it will take the same amount of work if done right... when replacing pistons... it may be possible to do it without removing the crankshaft, not sure on the 4.0... but if you have to take the crankshaft out anyway, it would be NO more trouble whatsoever to replace it with a different crank.. same goes with the connecting rods... you have to remove them anyway... replace them with the stroker rods and there you have it
