hi-temp paint

I have me some hi-temp spray paint. I wanted to paint my york compressor so it looks nice. It wants me to paint it, air dry for 60 minutes and then bake it at 450 for another 60 minutes. Do really need to bake it? Because momma said hell no to putting a compressor in the oven, and i'm not even sure if I should put that in there. Anywho..i painted it before I read all the instructions(thats my style). Do i need to strip it and redo it with another paint? or after it drys no big deal?

The only way to find out for sure if your paint job will work is to test it. Put it on, I am sure that it will be just fine. The imporntant thing to remember is to start with a clean dry surface with no wax or oil on it. Once in the engine compartment it will be subjected to some high temps. not 400 pluss degrees but it will get hot in there. By the way, What was the brand of paint you used?

Plasti-Kote Hi-Temp Paint. I know the bay will get pretty warm, and with warmer weather comming that will help out, but it says that it should be baked within 8 hours of application.

Seems like after 3 hours of air drying it has this powdery and wipes off easy..i'm guessing the baking is a crucial step in the processs. Anyone paint there york compressor? what type of paint ya use?

What you have described sounds like some kind of do it yourself powdercoating. As far as answering your question regarding what kind of paint to use you can get away with any type of spray paint for metal. Just make sure that it is clean. It does not have to be a high temp paint. The compressor will get hot but not hot enough to cook off the paint. And like I said before, make sure that the part that you are painting is clean and free of oil.

i don't know how to sand blast..i heard about it..people told me too..but i'm clueless.

To clean your compressor you can use a bit of carwash soap and a small stiff brush and water. make sure that all ports are sealed and don't submerge the thing. If it is really dirty you cn use some engine degreaser. then the soap and water. Sand blasting will require an aircompressor and a sandblaster. If you realy want the paint to stick good use a primer first and follow the directions. Good luck!

i have an air compressor for air tools and whatnot..are sand blasters cheap? yeah..i was using the sister's toothbrush but its just not cutting it anymore. i need somthing bigger.

Look to harbor freight for a cheep sandblaster. You can go to the hardware store and buy the sand. Sand is cheep stuff just make sure that it is sandblasting sand. The moisture that builds up in your airlines will cause you probs while sandblasting. Do yourself a favor and get a cheep inline filter and put it on the sandblaster to keep water out of the sand.
