It's been a long time being with my ('86) CJ7 jeep. Please refresh my memory...first, if I want to simply drive my jeep on the road in good weather, are the hubs locked into the '4' or the '2'? And, whichever position, to drive on the road, should the transfer case be in 4H? or what? I'm having a real difficult time getting the shifter to engage in 4H. Suggestions? Please email me at: c.seligman@insightbb.com

Thanks! :)

If you are driving on the road, then you'll want to be in 2 wheel drive, save 4 wheel drive for snow and offroading.

The 2 and 4 on your hubs stand for 2 wheel drive and 4 wheel drive, leave it on the 2 unless you want to go into 4 wheel drive, then move it to the 4

Your transfer case should stay in 2H most of the time. If you want to go offroad, then put into 4H (4 wheel drive High). If you need more torque, you can drop it into 4L (4 wheel drive low).

It's normal for you to have to coax it into 4 wheel drive. Try moving the Jeep forward and back a bit, to get it into 4wd.
