Help!

y removing the chain drive in the transfer case so it is no longer spinning the front drive shaft, could that in turn make a 4WD vehicle RWD or are there other complications. And how exactly does a jeep transmission (one that you can switch from RWD to 4WD) only spin the rear drive shaft (when engaged in RWD) when there is a drive chain connecting the front and rear drive shafts? What is going on that enables the power to go strictly to the rear driveshaft? My thoughts are based on a picture of a transfer case in the link below that was kindly presented to me by someone on this forum.

HowStuffWorks "Components of a Four-wheel-drive System"

In a normal car, the engine produces power that is transmitted to the transmission. That power turns a driveshaft that powers either the front, or the rear wheels (some cars are front wheel drive, some are rear wheel drive). In a 4x4, a transfer case is bolted to the side of the transmission - this will power the wheels that are not normally powered by the transmission (most 4x4s are rear wheel drive, and the transfer case will turn the front wheels).

The easiest way to make a 4wd car into rear wheel only would be to take out the front driveshaft - the connection between the transfer case and the front axle.

Are you trying to 2wd your Jeep?

on a side note, I closed your other threads - it's much easier for us to help you by opening one thread for each topic, that way others can see what has been said, and add to it (or tell me I'm full of bologna)

Sorry about the other threads, but thanks for the response. As for what Im trying to achieve, well I want to convert a 1988 Mazda 323 gtx to RWD. I chose this particular car because it always maintains a constant 50/50 split where as other AWD cars torque split varies with driving situations and therefore Im pretty sure has a much simpler set up to convert to RWD, a set up that I thought was similar to a jeeps. Just recently I sat in my friends cherokee and saw the option to be in RWD or 4WD and was very excited by the idea. I wondered how does jeep do it, whats going on inside that enables all the power to go to the rear wheels when in 2wd mode. I figured once I learned what was happening to make only the rear wheels drive I would be able to do the same with a 323 gtx, and I think thanks to your help and as long as the drive system of the gtx is similar to a jeeps (with a RWD base like you informed me) it could be possible. I knew nobody on a mazda forum would know anything about this as there are only about 1,200 gtx's in america and are not a popular topic of discussion or have a big scene, but my friend who goes to johnson state up in vermont is an avid and skilled jeeper who currently has 2 cj's has always told me if you want to know anything go to a jeep forum. So thanks a bunch for the help so far.

Oh also, If anyone else sees this and has any advice that you think could be of assistance to me im all ears, and thanks for the help so far

I doubt you can convert an AWD car to RWD as easily as you could a jeep. I'd check out some car forums and see if it's been done, likely the AWD setup is a lot different than the 4wd systems we deal with.

Honestly, I'd just ditch the drivetrain in there and go for one that's rear wheel drive... A swap of sorts if you follow my drift.

Bounty, you should be a politician!! You handled that much better that I would have (deleted many replies).

Why would you want a rwd drive car over an awd drive? The handling is better, and you have a better launch because of traction.

So I took a look at some pictures of the 1988 Mazda 323 GTX.... ummm.... good luck with your conversion to RWD.

At this point I'd suggest removing the drive shaft(s) to the front wheels to achieve RWD. Just make sure you're still able to steer that puppy! An AWD transfer case is different from a selectable transfer case (2WD, 4HI, 4LO), such as those found in Jeeps.
