i also seem to have a short in my gas gauge... the needle does this really weird "tick" so i have to make a "best guess" at how much gas i have. anyone had this happen to them? or know what i could do about it?

Best fix I've found is to remove the guage clusted and clean the contacts for the guage at the circuit board. It usually slows down the tick/bounce.

Otherwise, I just guessed my fuel at the middle of the bounce, on my old '88.

thanks bounty, ive never really messed with circuits before. is there a particular type of cleaner i should use?

Pencil eraser to clean the circuit board contacts. Make sure the battery is disconnected, real easy to short something out in there.

My YJ guage does the same thing. A good rule of thumb is to reset your tripmeter so you know how many miles you get out of a tank. Then you can always check against your mileage.
