Gas Mileage Improvement??

I have a 2003 Wrangler X w/ 6 cylinder automatic. Sticker says 16 - 19 mpg. I have put about 1800 miles on it and I get around 14 mpg. What's the deal?? Is their anything I can do to improve this? (short of trading for a 4 cyl!) Any ideas??

4cyls dont get any better in jeeps.... its prolly just your driving style... go easier on the right foot

Welcome to the board Toad,
This is a common way to improve gas milage and increase power:
Disconnect the intake tube from your airbox, you should see a plastic "restrictor tube" that is stuck inside the intake tube that you just disconnected. Pull this out with a pair of needle nose pliers. Reconnect the intake tube to the airbox and take it for a test run.
These were placed in wranglers to restrict airflow into the throttle body to appese Uncle Sam I guess... I believe these are still in the new TJs, good luck.

yeah... a 4 cyl really doesn't get that much better economy than the 6 cyl... you are on the gas more... the rpms are always higher, you're using just as much gas to get the same speed because of the lower gears.

there are many things you can do to increase your fuel economy... cone intake, k&n in stock air box, remove restrictor, bored throttle body, they say that a TB spacer will increase it... but basically anything that improves the airflow to to/through the intake will help your mileage

Thanks for the replies. I will check them out. I know it may vary, but say what kind of increase could I get when modifying this intake tube or something like the K&N airbox?? Far_Right, where are you? I'm in Sherwood Arkansas..

Remember, 16 is stop and go and 19 is highway. The way they test this is a 35 and at 55. I have found that when youhit 70+ the Gas Milage goes down drastically

I do about 1/2 city and 1/2 highway. Mostly between 60 and 65 on highway. I been getting a tad better than 14 mpg. My old 350 got 15 under same driving and also never stayed UNDER 65 while on highway. Just a little disappointed....

Hey soundman

It can greatly depend on how you drive it. Automatic transmission vehicles usually waste more gas than stick shifts.

I've been getting an average of 19.7 MPG on my 1988 Inline 6 (w/ manual transmission.)

This is what I was talking about in more detail with pics and such... good thing I looked this up cause I was wrong about one little thing... The restictor is in the airbox itself.
If you haven't heard already, alot of jeepers make thier own K&N cold air intake so they dont' have to shell out 150 bucks and up. People usually make them out of PVC pipe. I have access to a welder so I made mine out of aluminum tubing. You may want to try this mod to get what you want too. Here is my attempt at one...

If you want to make something like this, here is a step by step... http://groups.msn.com/SickAutos/historyofmy91wrangler.msnw?albumlist=2
