Hello my name is frenchy.

My problen is the sending unit in the tank.it quit working a while back and i drained and removed the tank pulled the sending unit out
andcleaned it.i tesyed the ohms and it was good it works out of the tank but as soon as you put it back in it doesn`t work.once in awhile when you hit a bump it works then the next morning forget it.my jeep is a 1981 scrambler.any ideas.it does have power and good ground.

I had a 74 CJ-5 and I had a problem like yours. It turned out that the gauge was bad. But you stated that when you hit a bump it starts to work. That tells me you have a bad connection somewhere. Recheck your connection at the pump again and the ground.

Well originally your jeep didnt have a fuel pump in the tank. It was on the side of the engine block, so someone has put your pump and tank in your jeep. I would do as sugested above, check all grounds and connections. Is there a fuse that runs the pump.

My guess would be a loose ground or a a defective gauge. Here is a link for installation and trouble shooting the fuel gauge. You can check the gauge by applying 12V's directly to the pink wire, but it has to be quick (only for a second and the needle should move all the way to fuel) or by checking the OHM's at the gauge.

The other possibility is that the float is punctured (fuel logged),but it sounds as if you have covered that.
