how do you tell the difference in the 7.8 and 8.8? i wanna pick one up but heard that they look exactly identical and ill be SOL if i get a 7.8

I can't really remember how to tell, but it seems like the 8.8" is bigger than the 7.5".......maybe I'm wrong, it's been awhile since I've been cursed with a Ford. All 4.0 V6 and V8 powered trucks and SUVs came with the 8.8" if that helps.
I ran the 7.5" in my Ranger pre-runner. Blew the cluster gears out twice hitting second gear, twisted a shaft too(with 31" tires!). Yeah, avoid the 7.5". It's a punk compared to even the D35.

do you kno if the 8.8 came with 4.10's in any model vehicle?

Yes, the 4.10 is pretty common in the Exploder and many have the limited slip diff.

sweet, thats my next mod then, ditch the d35 and drop in that if i can find it with 4.10s ill pick it up, order some perches and cut the shock mounts off my spare d35 and get it set up
