Yesterday I was going down the road in 3 rd gear when all of a sudden this loud grinding noise starts up. I down shifted and came to a stop. I checked to make sure that it had not been bumped into 4 wheel drive but still could not figure out where the grinding was coming from. A while back it did something similar and turned out what the mechanic said was the fly wheel ring had slipped. I didn't really understand but it was fixed for awhile. It sounds kinda like the clutch or throwout bearing. When I went back to get it later it was fine. could it be the clutch fork had stuck or something like that? I really doubt that it had healed itself, But that would be nice........Any thoughts???????

The ring gear on your flywheel is only under presure when the starter is turning it. Never herd of any thing like that before. You might want to check and see if the ol house cat is still around hehehehe Tug

I have seen starters gears kick into the flywheel when the spring inside the starter for that small gear is worn out. That was on a Ford Motor though. It does make and odd grinding noise.

I have been sticking close to home with mainly just going to feed the cows in it but using the 4 wheel drive. I hasn't done it again. Maybe the throwout bearing stuck or something. Jeeps are funny things...seems like they don't like attention being paid to certain parts of them and not others....make sense?????
