Fluid on undercarriage.

I was under my jeep yesterday and noticed red fluid sprayed up on the undercarriage right above where the u-joint to the rear driveshaft goes into the transfer case. The u-joint, transfercase, transmission are all dry and clean on the outside. There isn't even a hint of this fluid on any of these. I checked all the fluid levels and everything's good. I can't figure out where it's coming from. I called a friend and he was trying to tell me that when the grease inside the u-joint gets hot and mixes with water it can turn red...I think he's full of it. This fluid is not thick and is red like cranberry juice....looks exactly like transmission fluid to me but the transmission's all dry on the outside. Anyone have any ideas where this might be coming from?

When your suspension droops the tail yolk slides in and out of the transmission. When it slides out it could be leeking a little. On an old truck the seal gos bad. I never did one before on my 93, but iam sure you can replace the seal without removing the transmission.[addsig]

It's a bad output seal on the transfer case.
  • Drain the transfer case
  • Remove the rear driveshaft
  • Pry out the old seal
  • Take it to the auto parts store, there is a number on the seal
  • Clean the transfer case seal surface
  • Add some silicone to the metal flange on the seal
  • Install the seal, may take putting it in the freezer to shrink it slightly

i would put money on it that your seal is leaking.. its not a big deal.. only a few bucks, and easy to replace[addsig]

Are you sure it's transmission fluid, maybe it was some squirrel that just wasn't quick enough that day.[addsig]

damn squirrels!

Definatly sounds like a out put seal in the slip yoke.

What kind of grease are you using on your u-joints? Try not to over fill them!
