finding what gear

OK I now this has been went over before but I could not find it.
How do you figure out what gear ratio you have. I know that you can mark the driveshaft and rotate the tire 1 full rotation, but what do you do with the numbers that you get from that?

Nothing. The number of driveshaft revolutions is the differential gear ratio.

There are possible complications with using this method of determining differential gear ratio. Those complications are a result of the various differential types.

If you are talking about the 95 YJ that you have mentioned in previous posts, somebody around here probably has a chart of the ratio-to-differential tag or stamped code.

It takes a little sliding across the ground.....but don't jack it up. Just put it in neutral and roll it until the tire makes one revolution, while counting the revolutions of the driveshaft. Makes no difference what carrier, tires, etc......

Check the numbers on the metal tag bolted to the diff cover. 1st three digits on the first or second line should be the gear ratio. Should be 3.07, 3.55, 3.73, or 4.10.

You can also pull the diff cover (to service the fluid anyway) and check the numbers stamped in the edge of the ring gear. Divide the large 2-digit number by the small 2-digit number and you'll get your gear ratio.

What year and model Jeep do you have? Engine and transmission type?

This is what I have found. The tag has

52068832
4.11 561 2

So I have a 4.11 gear correct. Is this stock?
Just trying to see if I should think about regearing when I get
new tires latter this year.
Looking at going to 31s or 33s
I have 30s on now but actually measure 28 inch

ya, 4.11's would be the stock ratio for a 4 cyl. manual.
