Fail!

So took the jeep to emissions today and it failed. Any ideas on what to do? Carbon monoxide to high at 94.83 standard is 25.00
 
What state do you live in? I live in MD and you can get historic tags and never have to do emissions. Historic vehicles never need a vehicle inspection either.

When you say stock, how stock? Do you have a upgraged carb, like a weber? Was a Nutter Bypass performed on it? Is there an air pump? Is the EGR valve still connected between the manifolds? Does it miss at idle or smell like rich exhaust? The late CJ's and early YJ's had really crappy emissions computers/modules that a lot of people disconnected. Can you take some photos of under the hood and the exhaust system?.....We got to start somewhere dude :???:.

It has a weber carb 273, are the weber carbs not the ones that came stock? dose not smell rich, sorry I'm new to jeeps and still trying to sort threw this thing

That's not a weber Bro.... I believe it is a Carter? Sorry, I'm viewing it with my iPhone so it's hard to see. I'll take a closer look tomorrow at work. Regardless, how does it idle? Ruff and fast? Two things to check from the get go: does it have a catalytic converter on the exhaust system and start looking for cracked or loose vacuum lines. I have a schematic of the vacuum lines, I'll look for it and send it to you.
 
it is for sure a carter.

are you guys allowed to swap carbs and junk and still be legal as long as it passes smog?
 

Has the converter, idles fast when first started then after a while down to 10000 seams smooth kinda sputters a little. Drives good, at the stops it idles good doesn't try to stall at all. I just finished running all the vacuum lines over the past few days

I did not know weber did some custom work AMC/Jeep....Learn something new everyday :idea:. Maybe superJ and I are on the same page (I think). You could swap a couple of things to improve emissions, but it's time consuming and can get costly. I also am not sure how close you'll get to your states requirement. My 85 has a Weber 32/36, High-output Electronic Ingition (HEI), a cataylic converter and a Nutter bypass across the stock emissions computer. I had no problem passing Maryland Emissions, only to find out I did not need it- Historic Tag route.

I good place to start would be pull the spark plugs. They tell a good story about engine performance.
 
As far as I know as long as whatever is swapped is 50 state legal it's fine

How often is your vehicle required to go through emmissions? Again back to Maryland rule, If you spend a certian ammount of money trying to fix the problem you can get a waiver until the next test. We test every 2 years. If that is the same for AZ do you have a mechanic buddy that can fudge a receipt for this go round then you could get your historic tags in 2014.

we have them in parts of texas but not where i live.

i would look into that deal about as long as its 50 state legal. make sure before you do any swapping.

thats interesting weber made stock jeep carbs. i would've never thought it either.
