Engine Question

Hi. We have an 89 Cherokee that we recently had some engine work done on. Supposedly the shop put an engine out of a newer Jeep into ours; but we suspect they threw some parts at our old engine and charged us for the newer engine. Does anyone know how to determine if the engine in ours is the old one or a newer one? (Using Vin #, etc.) We would appreciate any help or ideas on this!

Thanks,
Virginia

Do you have the Chrysler Part # off the new engine? and possibly the old one too?. the Vin # would help in determining the Engine part # off the parts list available for that Jeep. from there i can use that as a reference on which engine is new. or i can try to. sometimes it doesn't work.

The part # that is stamped on the engine that is in the Jeep now is 806MX20. We don't know what number might have been on the old engine or if this might still be the old engine. Also, the VIN # is 1J4FJ58L7KL419932. So far no one at dealerships or other engine specialty places have been able to help with this information. Maybe you have access to information that many other people don't? We would appreciate any help you might be able to give us!!!

Thanks,
Virginia

I thought vin numbers were stamped onto the car in several places. Engine block (somewhere), inside the door, dashboard. I very well could be smoking some good stuff.

The Vin# is Found on the Main Structure of the Vehicle. Any additional Stamp or Etch of the vin # all thru out the veh. is an option when ordered from the Manufacturer. i.e. Door glass, windshield, doors, hood, liftgate etc.. The Engines will have an engine code stamped on the block for traceability. these #'s are documented by the manufacturer. i.e. 1xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx(Vin#) to 1xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx(Vin#) will have XXXXX engine code to xxxxxxx engine code. this how the manufacturer is able to narrow down the Veh. involved in a Recall or associate a relevant TSB to that veh.

Did you call a dealership, or actually go to one? I would go to a dealership and ask if you could speak to one of their more experienced Jeep mechanics. Tell him the situation and maybe he could help. I know a dealership can take those numbers and find out if its the correct engine. They are just blowing you off.

On a side note- I got ripped of by a mechanic and picketed their business. Picketing a business is one of the most liberating experiences EVER! You would not believe the support from the community! People stopping and saying "We need more people like you!" The mechanic gave me my money back after just about 1 hour of watching people stop and talk to me. He called the police...they said "too bad, you apparently screwed the wrong guy"

Good luck!!!

To Steel Headz,
Thanks! We already know about the shift interlock recall. Also, I think you were asking about where the # we have was stamped? It is from the right side between 2 & 3 cylinder. Again, we appreciate any and all info you can supply us!
