electrical trouble

To the knowledgable,

I have an A/C fan that when current goes to it it runs but after replacing the A/C compressor, somehow the wiring from the relay in the fuse panel to the fan does not trigger the fan to operate. So i decided to bypass the questionable relay and wire directly to the battery via a 2 way switch and a 40 amp relay.
currenty I'm wired as such with no success:

If you were holding the back of the relay facing you, the bottom pin is #30, the only vertical pin.
it is wired to the positive side of the battery.
to the right and up is pin #85 which is wired to ground.
The top pin is #87 and that is wired to the positive wire of the fan (which I believe is a black wire) I have a 5 amp in-line fuse here.
The pin to the left is #86 which is wired to the 2 way switch.
from the 2 way switch I'm running a wire with a 5 amp in-line fuse to the positive side of the battery.
The damn fan still is not getting current. I've tried 2 other configurations with no success.
help!

Welcome to jeeps.com . Without going into why the fan relay isn't triggered by the a/c clutch relay as it is supposed to , I will say that the first configuration you posted is correct. Having a fuse from battery to terminal #30 is good safety wise and fused from terminal #87 to electric fan good as well. I believe terminal #86 is the positive side of the relay and terminal #85 to ground but I could be wrong , I usually have to check that as I seem to forget . But terminal 30 is power in and terminal 87 is to the component for sure. You can reverse the terminals 85 & 86 if polarity is a concern but the coil inside the relay should energize regardless . Of course it is best and right to have the polarity correct though. I must ask , have you checked if your getting power from the fused source from your switch ? Are you certain the fan spins if jumped directly to the battery positive ? If yes to both , then the relay will have to be checked if the internal coil is t energizing.

30 battery pos load side (High current fuse)
87 load (be sure to ground load)
86 ground
85 to switch and battery 2A fuse

Usually the red lead is the positive on the fan and black is ground.
