Electric fan question

I just got an electric fan out of a 93 taurus at the junkyark for $20!
What is the best way to wire it? I want it to come on at a certin temperature, and wire a cut off switch. There are three wires, Black (-), blue (+), and a grey with a red stripe. Also what size fuse should I use?
I appriciate any help, thanks.

Get a thermostat fan controller from a quality auto parts store like NAPA. Pick up a relay and a switch as well.

There is another thread on here that has a diagram for using the relay, and wire the switch inline to turn the fan off when needed, like deep water and mud.

Not sure on the wire colors, I know others here can help there.

could it be that it is a dual speed fan, and internally controlled... so that seperate 12v sources will supply for different speeds

It is a dual-speed fan and I'm sure that's what the wires are, but I didn't want to guess which wire was which speed. The ground is a no-brainer, and hook the other wire (one at a time) to the battery and you'll determine which is each speed.

I figured one wire would be ground, the other power and the other wire would be used for the temp. probe....although I'm probably wrong since I've never wired up a fan before.

Ok, I got it all hooked up, and the extra power wire is for a slower fan speed. Is there any reason I should use the slower speed?

I'd run the fan at the slow speed if it keeps your jeep cool. The slow speed draws a lit less amps. If possible wire it up with a 3-way switch so you can choose the low or high speed with one switch.

Bounty,
You asked me before about an adjustable switch for your fan. I noticed Autozone had one the other day in their electric fan section for $18. I forget the name brand, but it wasn't that Wells crap they sell.

Send up a pic or two of how it looks on there. How did you mount it and ect.... Would make a great wright up for the how to section. tug

O Well

If you use a double throw relay you can set the slow speed to run anytime the motor is running and set the high speed to come on at a certain temp. This would also require a second relay to supply switchable power to the slow/fast relay. As for fuse size check with the ford dealership to find the fuse they used, or check the size in another Taurus. I would recomend a circuit breaker instead of a fuse, might cost a little more to start, but you don't have to replace it.

If you need additonal info PM me.

i heard of this and all..can somebody tell me the reason for the electric fan? the stock one isn't good enuf? or is it for like crossin a stream or somthing with the water getting kicked up in the engine?

The stock fan is fine, the change is so you can turn off the fan while doing water crossing, but it also frees up HP because the motor is not having to move the air. It also takes care of having the fan off center of the radiator after doing a body lift. Just remember you should upgrade your alternator because of the extra constant amp draw form running an electric fan.
It also frees up extra room for a motor swap and removes the chance of fan to radiator contact.

I added one to the grill on my CJ to help the mechanical fan when creeping on the trails. It gets hot here in the Bama summer and the engine will start to get warm when running at a slow crawl. I want to get the hood louvered, but that's way on down the list.
