Dual batteries?

Just wondering if I went to dual batteries, do I need a more powerful alternator or will the stock one do? Also how are they wired together? Is it positive terminal to positive terminal and negative to negative or do they both have to run off the alternator directly?

Most setup's I have seen use a battery isolator.
Jc whitney sells them for rv's .
But I have also herd that you need to exactally the same batterys .
And they need to have the same internal resistance . ( don't ask me)....
What kinda power do you need ( for what ) winch/stereo ?

Hi,

If you use a battery switch or some other method of isolating the two batteries, then you should be ok if you want to use different batteries. If you connect and use the two batteries in parallel (and at the same time), you'll want batteries that are identical in type, capacity, and age. Also in this kind of setup, the alternator will charge both at the same time, thus not as quickly.

However, Using a battery switch or isolator is the safest way to go.

I'm looking at running them both at the same time. I want to use one for my accessories such as lights and eventually a winch. I also use a power inverter when camping (the girls like their blender drinks). I've noticed that when I turn on all my lights which consits of 4 Explorer ProComp 135W's and 2 driving lights, my lights seem to dim. If I run them both at the same time and have the lights hooked up to one battery, will it take power from both batteries and drain them both, or just drain one?

with an isolator, it will drain just one... with them hooked in direct parallel, it will drain both

I just went through the same thing. I have a red top and a yellow top optima. Red only for starting and the stock jeep wiring harness and the yellow top for my winch, air compressor and amp. I have a 117amp alternator in my jeep stock so that was a good start for me. I use a sure power 120 amp battery isolator and an 80 amp automatic reset circuit breaker also for sure power. The way that I wired them up was one wire comes out of the alternator and goes to the isoaltor. Then the wire that went to the alternator origianly goes to the isolator from the red top. Then last a wire from the other post on the isolator to the circuit breaker and from there to the yellow top. That is how the guys at sure power told me to wire it. I hope this will help you. here is the site http://www.surepower.com/Products/batiso.asp
