Double the shocks up...

I was thinking of ways to better my ride in the yj, and my dad suggested to put 2 shocks on each wheel. I guess it would make my ride a little less bumpy, I drove it with no shocks during the soa project and it was bouncing all over the place, so why wouldn't a pair of shocks be even better? I have seen this done on trucks before, up to 4 per wheel even. I realize that it would mean making some custom brackets which is no problem. I was wondering what you guys thought of the idea and if anyone has done this to a jeep before...

There will be no need for more than two in the rear and four in the front. too many shocks and it will cause flex and bind issues. the amount of articulation will be limited when there are three or more shocks. you really wont need more then four total if you get a good quality unit. if you want to take it a step further there are those rancho rs 9000's that are adjustable in-cabin, but I have zero experience with them.

hardtop

The Rs9000's are the best dal going. No need for cheesy double shocks. That is reserved or rednecks with early Broncos and light bars. The RS9000's are 9 speed adjustable now and you can set the front and rear separate. I set the front a little heavier than the rear. I turn them all the way down on the trail. Four Rs9000's will still be cheaper than 6 or more other shocks.

The thing is I already spent money on new shocks... skyjacker hydros. I was looking into rancho shocks but i couldn't find any for my size lift! Do they make them for 6" applications?
I was only going to put 2 shocks on each corner... not go overboard to hinder articulation. I think for now I'll just stick it out and take the bumps in stride.

I used Rancho 9012's which are 12" stroke shocks. I had to make my own shock mounts. I think Warrior products makes some weld on shock mounts.
The Skyjacker hydros are excellent shocks. You may want to try just running one at each wheel for now and see how you like it. Can you put them on right now without having to fab up any brackets?

YJ or CJ Full Roll Cage

Too many shocks and the ride will be very stiff. Most multiple shock setups have special valving, if done correctly, to work in conjunction with other shocks.

You've got a good shock, the bounce may be associated to something else. Could be the shackles are too tight, often caused by torqueing without the weight on the springs. Could be the springs, depending on the brand and the spring rate.

Don't ya just love this weather? ^_^

Accually, I already have the shocks installed, but I am experiancing very big bumps in the road which never seemed to be there before. I was unaware that shackles could be TOO tight... I did tighten them right up when I put them back on... accually I am ordering some stuff from quadratec today and I was planning on getting currie boomerang shacles for the rear and a pair for the front, all with a 1/2" lift. Anyway, when I put these new ones on, how tight should they be?
I do have a full leaf Rancho AAL in the stock spring packs, could that have something to do with it? I chose rancho cause I read that they last the longest and don't have too harsh a ride in comparason to other aal. Thanks for the suggestions

oh and I didn't have to fab anything to put the shocks in

Why boomerangs in the rear? I have only seen them run on the front to keep the shackle form inverting when extremely flexed. Never seen that happen in the rear.
Nevermind. After thinking about it I realized that this is because most of us run buggy leaves in the rear and that is unusual with a buggy leaf setup.
The shackles should come with bolts and Nylock nuts (nuts that have the plastic in the last few threads). If they don't give you torque specs, just snug them down to the point that you are not compressing the bushings or bending the shackles. They won't back out because of the plastic in the nuts.

The boomerang shackles in the rear will help the shackle clear the rear crossmember under compression.

Normal shackle bolts should be torqued to 65 to 85 ft. lbs. A lot less if you run the nylock nuts, this will allow easier movement of the shackle and more flex.

The AAL probably isn't your problem. What are you using for spring clamps?

CD Players....

spring clamps as in the things holding the packs together? if so I just used what rancho gave me to use, they bend out over the sides of the pack rather than over the top of the pack.

Loosen all 8 shackle bolts up and jump up and down on the jeep, moving the suspension, then tighten them.

By torquing them without the weight on the jeep the bushings and sleeves may be preloaded, causing some extra bounce.

toyota clutch change....

are you using stock shock mounts with the soa? i would suggest moving to alternate mounting

yeah the shackles I ordered have greasable bolts...

no Im not using stock shock mounts. I believe I have the mounts welded to the side of the axle tube...
