disconnected the swaybar today

I have been having some problems with my driveline making aweful noises, so i went downstairs (under the jeep) today and noticed my transmission mount to the skidplate was missing the nut... it was just a bare bolt sticking down... so i went and got a replacement... went to the hardware store, and while there, i decided to get me some parts to fab up a swaybar disconnect... i bought some hitch pins so i could easily unhook and remove them to free up the movement... long story short on this... things went wrong, things went wrong, bad bushings, this, that.... so when I had them apart, i decided to go for a ride to see how it affected the onroad performance.... and when I noticed very little to no difference at all... I decided to keep them disconnected... in fact, any difference i DID notice, i liked, and made for a BETTER ride... it is still there, but just unbolted from the springplate and secured up... i guess i'll use it the opposite of what others do.... i'll leave it off, but connect it when i feel i want it.... which i am thinking will be never

TEST TIME... BIG outting we went on tonight... the transmission mount WAS the problem with my driveline noises, so that part was fixed and out of the way... and let me say... my jeep has NEVER performed better offroad than it did tonight... I was quite impressed on what restriction a swaybar creates. Even with my 4x4 drag slicks, I was storming through holes of mud, climbing fallen trees and rutted hills, conquering huge dirt piles, and passing through ruts like i've never done before... and the ride, wow... it was softer than i've ever felt in any vehicle i've ever owned... instead of "BANG BANG BOUNCE---SLAM"... all wheels stayed down and kept the frame surprisingly close to level... and when I did bounce, there was no more hitting the roof... and this is all while i am currently running NO shocks in the rear... so, to all of you... if you have not yet installed a swaybar disconnect.. DO IT... i don't think mine is ever getting connected again

other than bounty... is anyone else running the "no swaybar/no rear tracbar" setup?

PS... if you are 4xing on an ATV dice run course, and you see a sign that says:

Steep Hill
<--------
Bypass
-------->

... make sure that you see all of it, and not just this part:

Steep Hill
<--------
Bypass

...it gets very interesting when you have air in your brakelines

It is very surpriseing what them sway bars restrict off road aint it. I was blown away as to what the difference was off road but I did notice a huge difference on the road and never could bring myself to run with out them on the road. It is one of the best mods for off road for the money anyone can make in my way of seeing things. tug

If you have leaf springs you really don't need the sway bar. The reason I say that is stock on an xj rear suspension there is one. It is in the pile with the rest of the crud that I ripped off of mine. In the front I have the JKS quick disco's and coils. I love those things. Really easy to remove for the trails and easy to put back on. If you drive on the highway much and have the sway bar off your front end you are asking for problems. If you ever have to react quickly you may roll your jeep right over. That includes things like getting a flat tire. I don't know if you have ever had an oversized front tire blow on the highway before but it sure will get your heart beating fast.
Just my $.02

I've been running without a front swaybar for a few years now, once you forget to reconnect the disconnects and decide the ride is fine, you never go back. Losing the rear trackbar was a good choice too.

You will get a little more body roll in the curves, depending on your spring rate, but it's no sports car and shouldn't be driven like one.

I think TJ owners are jealous

Jealous of WHAT ?

Jealous of what ? I have lived in a state wheere 12 inch lifted trucks with 44's are a common sight. And to see one on its side because he had to turn quickly to avoid something and he wasnt running sways is a scary sight.
As everyone here so far has stated they ruduce the body roll on the paved road. So it takes me 5 minutes to disco them before I go wheelin.
I/we have to stop any way to have a drivers meeting so why take them off? Your life might be a good reason. Just one more added saftey feature some one designed to protect your life.

I didn't notice a difference when I removed my sway, it's in the junkpile with my old springs.

I have my rear track bar installed, and have the quick disco's in the front
I don't touch the rear for off roading, and take the minute to un hook the front. This is TJ flex WITH a rear track bar.

I always stop and give my jeep a good once over, air down my tires and pull the disco's before I hit the trails. When I am getting off the trails I do the same thing. You have to check your ride, check it often and especially after you work it out on the trails.
Another reason I have to stop at the end of the trails is to take a screwdriver to my tires and get all the rocks out of the tread lugs. It only takes a couple minutes but I know that I am not going to throw rocks at fellow drivers. Unless I pick them up on the road.

You should never disconnect a track bar on a TJ, it is an integral part of the 5-link suspension and will not work properly without it.

Jeeps were made for decades with no sway bars, and were only designed and installed after much negative press about the street performance of SWB vehicles such as Jeeps.

To each their own.

i ditched the TJ rear sway bars and i think i might have even lost them, i did invest in some Steelhorese disco's though. the way i drive i scare me passengers too much with them disconnected

I'm just wondering.......I've heard about running without the rear, but have wondered what the consequence would be...as you stated, seems like an integral part of the rear suspension.

The rear sway keeps the back of the jeep from lifting upwards in a turn a VERY intragrated part of the suspension. AND the more you lift the bigger its needed.

not my trackbar i dont even know what that thing is, i said sway bars, they came in the lift kit and i discod them for a comp and never got around to putting them back on

Most TJ owners never disconnect the rear swaybar, no benefit noticed. Don't remove the rear track bar on a TJ, there is nothing to prevent side to side movement of the axles on a TJ unless you install triangulated control arms, which in my opinion is a better design.

Different ballgame with leaf spring suspensions, they don't need all the bracketry that those round springs require :P

if any TJ owner wants another tracbar for EVEN more support for your inferior coil springs, i'll sell you mine for a few bucks... it seems that my square came with MANY MANY extra parts, that when removed, improve its performance
