Detroit Locker issues

new jeep guy

New member
First of all thanks for all the help with the axel wrap issue from my last thread. Fixed that and now I have a new issue. Every once and a while when I put in the clutch the jeep wants to dive to the passenger side and then when I let out on the clutch and give it gas again it pulls hard to the drivers side. Other times it seems to drive straight and have no issues at all. I also hear alot of popping on the drivers side sometimes. I have a detroit locker on the rear and it seems that it does not engage on the drivers side all the time causing this issue. I have never owned a rig with a detroit locker before but this does not seem normal.
I have looked at the owners manual and did the test it says to do to see if it is operating properly and the drivers side does not seem to work as well as the passenger side but it does engage.
Any input on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a normal Detroit Locker. Make sure the rear tires have equal pressure and are as close as possible in tread depth. Swap out with the front tires if necessary to get 2 in the rear that are the same diameter.

A detroit will bang and pop as it locks/unlocks, causing some crazy onroad characteristics. The problems are compounded with unequal tire pressure, tire size, worn suspension components, etc.

X2! This is why I spent the extra dough and got myself selectable lockers (ARB) front and rear; I have heard many stories like this online about the Detroit lockers.

The good news is that the locker is very strong, and that you can actually change your driving habbits so that you can live with the lockers.

I took my 3rd member out of the rear of the jeep and pulled apart the locker. Found the clutch assembly on the drivers side broken. Going to look for parts tommorow. Hopefully I dont have to replace the whole locker.

most likely not. since you said third member, I will assume you have a 9" rear. super easy chunk to set gears up if you have to.

I got detroits front and rear, best locker in my opinion. If you do have a 9", I would avoid the arb like the plague, I have heard a lot of stories about this locker and axle combo.
