Dash conversion?

Have a 97 TJ and was wondering if it where possible to Change out the TJ dash with a YJ dash? Dont know if anyone has tried or even herd of this being done but open for comments thanks

not sure if that conversion has been done but try googling it. the yj and cj dash is a lot more utilitarian then the newer ones because you guys have so much electronics hidden behind the dash so that might be an inhibitor

And don't forget the airbag :(

The problem would be the ecm and without the power flow through circuit of the air bags your jeep will not run since it would think the bag have been deployed

also the ECM will require the TJ guages inorder for the OBDII diagnostics to work and the TJ guage cluster simply will not fit into a YJ dash. YJ's never came with ODBII diagnostics so there is no plug and play set up. I am sure you could try to figure something out, but I do not see a value in it.

second, the HVAC system in teh YJ is cable operated, the TJ uses electrical selonoids and vacumn lines, so you would have to change the entire system and I am not sure if anything is compatible between the two models.

I didn't realize how much work it would be prob not going to even attempt it I thought it would look good because I like how the older style dashes look

I can see where it would be a nightmare to try and just swap out your dash for a YJ one....
What about going with an aftermarket /replacement set of gauges that are TJ compatible( hook up wise) but sized to fit in a YJ style dash pod... ?
Just a thought ...

I wasn't aware they had anything like that

A company called AutoMeter sells a wide variety of gauges in multiple sizes...(for all makes/models if vehicles)
They also sell a replacement dash pod that Is designed to replace a YJ dash..
All of their replacement dash pods require the use of their gauges... not factory..

they even show a TJ dash pod section that uses the same size gauges as they list for their YJ dash pod....

It's at least worth a visit to their website before abandoning the idea completely..

man, LilRedYJ, you are the encyclopedia on everything. you find some crazy cool stuff on everything

you can run the autometer guages, but you will still need to take apart the factory cluster and some where mount the internal cuircitry for the check engine and the tripometer button, these are used in the ODB II system and need to be maintained inorder for the vehicle to be compliant.
Depending on your state, you may be able to re-flash the ECM to no longer run a OBD II system, but I honestly don't know. This is an issue I am having with my state, I want to swap my gas engine in my pick up for a cummins diesel; the issue I am having is that regardless of the motor, I need to have a OBD II compliant system operating correctly (ie no check engine light) and the system needs to monitor the motor inorder to stay off, simply not hooking stuff up will yield a check engine light.

I was looking into the deisel conversion and it seems like a lot of people are using the 3.9 liter cummins turbo diesel that's what I eventually want in my jeep I just gotta start saving and purchasing parts
