There is a hole on top of the axle casing. What is it and why is it there? Is there a part missing here? What do I need to put there?

breather hole maybe? I think there is supposed to be a hose going to that hole. im no expert but thats what it sounds like to me

If it comes out the top of the axle housing, rdtj is correct it is a breather, there is supposed to be a hose coming off it going up to somewhere near the radiator. I also believe there is some type of check valve on top of the hose, will let air/pressure out but nothing in.
