Does anyone have any good info about Raid and SCSI devices? Other than make sure you have a good back-up?

I've heard that about a thousand times today......I didn't have a good back-up....I wasn't in charge of backing up.....THAT GUY IS ON LEAVE!

I think we can make the server work, but I need an Adaptec 2010S SCSI controller. Does anyone have one? :(

I have an Ultra Wide SCSI controller, but i don't think it's the same as what your looking for. I can look up the model if your interested. It came out of my Home Server to run my Cad programs. I think i still have the Hardrive for it too.

I probably had one in a box at my old job where I was a network admin but that does little help to you now. Sorry.

No worries.......it was more of a get it off my chest and laugh at it moment really. I appreciate the help, but I think we're still goin to be alright, but my reputation is pretty much in the dumper. No one remembers all the good you do when your a net admin.....they just remember the one time you f'd up.

Yup. When you are there at night and on weekends making sure everything is running smooth you never get any appreciation but if the network goes down or they lose a file that didn't get backed up then it is all your fault and they won't let you forget. Luckily I don't have to worry about that anymore.

Well, after a long day of "this is it....the next time we restart it, it should work" we have decided it's time to admit defeat and call a bonafide data recovery company. The good news is that if we can get it approved it won't be my 15K that gets spent! I'm in the wrong business.....data recovery is where the money is at!

Problem is I was never there on nights or weekends.....I stayed late a few times, but it was never to back up the server obviously!

Wow - 15K is alot for data recovery. I've only sent off failed 2.5 IDE drives, but they always ended up < $2000 for recovery.

The worst part is when they recover nothing, and you still have to pay.

So what happened? Was it just a case of server failure, and no good backups? Every admin has to have that happen (I had it happen, got sent home for the day, read the riot act, etc).

Luckily when it happened to me, I had already quit. So I guess it didn't happen to me but they did blame me. There was a box that a guy had under his desk as a test machine and in the course of getting ISO certified we had to move it to the server room. No one told me to back up his SQL database and of course when the hard drive crashed they blamed me for the lost data.

20k was on the high side of the estimate. 2 IDE drives isn't much compared to a 6 drive dual RAID config. Though, I think the powers have decided against that course and are just goin to suck up the loss and deal with it.
