I have a CD ROM for my new GPS mapping software. Good.;)
My desktop won't recognize it in the drive. Bad.:x

It won't auto run, I can't go to my computer and make it run. If I go to RUN and type E:, still nothing but a few weird sounds.
It almost acts like the CD is blank and is open to record on.

I've tryed a bunch of other CDs and they all auto run fine and start the program ok.

I've tryed that same CD in my laptop and it works fine. It's just that I want the software on my desktop not my laptop.
I'm running XP on both machines.
I've never seen anything like this.:?

Hmmm... you got me. Don't they have a tech support #?

yeah Garmin is pretty swamped right now and they'll just likely want to mail me out a different CD. I just wanted to bounce this around the board and see if you guys have seen this before.

FWIW, I had this happen in a workstation (laptop) I was setting up for a customer this morning. Rebooted the stupid thing a few times and it finally worked. So maybe try that? Good luck!

Nevermind, I was thinking of DVD, not CD-ROM......

Couple of things...did you open My Computer or windows explorer to look at your (is it possible your cd is D: instead of e:?), if it works in your laptop is it possible its a DVD not a cd? Hope either of these help, if not is it possible to network your laptop to your home pc and then share out the laptops drive? And copy that way (should just need a crossover cable or cheapo switch and share out the laptops hardrive.)

Good call, I didn't think of that. 90 check to see what kind of drive you have.

unfortunatley, even if that solution worked it wouldn't fix the big problem.
You see you have to load the factory CD onto your hard drive because it loads a shell program, then you still have to use the CD again everytime to actually transfer the mapsets. The bulk of the data stays on the CD and only the shell program you load acts as a conduit or pathway to bring out the data and transfer it to your GPS.
So if I were able to run the CD and install the set up program, I still would need to run the CD each time I wanted to load a map set and that would be a PIA to keep doing when you have to hook up two PCs to do it.

I even checked out my drivers for the CDRW on my desktop and they are up to date. Like I said in my first post, all of my other program CDs autorun and play fine in my desktop, only this on will not, but it does work in my laptop.

I went ahead and installed it on my laptop and transfered over the maps I wanted, but I'm still calling in to get a new CD. I figure there is some minor flaw and my desktop is just refusing to acklowledge it while for some reason the laptop overlooks it and runs it fine.

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You were RIGHT!!
I looked at the label and it is a DVD and my Desktop is only a CDRW!

Holy Smokes, that one went right over my head:lol:

Why would they send out a DVD instead of a CD? Do they assume that everyone has a DVD player in their desktop?
That makes me even more mad!

But at least I know that there isn't really a problem.

Thanks Joe!

LOL. Somebody flame this guy!!!! :bomb:  :purple:

90, had the same thing happen in my toughbook. It was made in 03 and dvd roms were not real common yet. The Garmin software is all DVD's so it couldn't see the disk. I bought a 49.99 external dvd rom from Frys made by memorex. This allows me to load new maps at home through the external drive. The maps that I want to load from while on the trail I just pulled off the DVD and copied to CD rom. Good to go.

Hope this helps!!

Hey now Twisted,... It's an honest mistake,... See what happens when you mix Texans, alcohol, and technology,. . If you need another example of the same,... just listen to the audio clip in the other post where I explain the importance of here and now":drunk:
!!!

It's probably on DVD instead of CD because if they put it on CD you'd have 5 or 6 discs to fumble around with and/or lose, as opposed to just 1 DVD ;).

Gone&DoneIt,
they at least sent me Version 8 of the City Navigator North America, it is a great improvement over the one I have for my Etrex from Mapsource. ;)
