comparing the jk and the yj

I get a message that you can't open the attachment

i tried to upload a word doc with some pics and a paragraph on it but it wouldn;t load.

i was showing the angle of my 87 yj with no lift and an 08 jk with a tiny lift on the hill at the end of my street. the small lift and 1" larger tires let the jk get higher up the hill then i could get because my front bumper got caught but, if you look carefully at the angle, i think i got more vertical then the jk did.

the jk climbed a lot easier then my ol yj but i think the lockers did that. it kept stalling at low rpm (its a stick) where my auto just stayed at whatever rpm i kept the foot at. i had to keep feathering the standard to keep enough rpm/clutch to keep the engine from dying or the jeep from flying up the hill.

comparison:

the jk is nice, very nice. all electronic stuff in it and power windows/locks makes it a very comfortable vehicle. the independant suspension makes the ride super stiff though since its such a short wheelbase. it has lots of power and can fit monstrous wheels under the fenders.

the yj is not as polished as the jk. no power anything makes a very dependable platform for ensuring you will not get stuck somewhere. not as creature comfortable but rides a whole lot smoother because of hte leaf springs. solid smooth power from the automatic makes a huge difference in climbing slowly though. not having taken the jk on the highway, i cannot compare the daily driving but if its anything like cristina's 07 jku, the engine is very sporty and gets a lot better gas mileage then my carb's straight 6.

i will keep my good ol yj though

The JK does not have independent suspension. Perhaps you meant coil spring suspension versus leaf in the YJ.

The JK was just as vertical as the YJ until it broke over the top of the hill, which was when the pic was taken.

Don't forget the JK is a lot wider than the YJ (more stability) as well as a lot heavier.

doh, your right. not independant suspension, your right, coild spring suspension. sorry. trying to do to many things at once and not concentrating on one of them.

i tried to get the jk to go all the way over hte hill but alfred, my buddy didn;t want to try. i figured we would get high centered though :)

i tried to get the pic where they were both the most vertical but prior to brekaing the top, the jk was not nearly as vertical because the length difference made the angle appear less dramatic then it does in that picture.

the jk is wider, taller, longer, and weighs a lot more. it is still a very nice truck though. the wife's daily is a jku and i love driving it. she keeps trying to get me to buy a two door jk but i keep saying no because 1) i don;t want a payment 2) i think the jk is too much like a car on the inside. i like the basicness of my yj with no power stuff to worry about breaking.

and, just so people know, this is not meant to put down the jk model wranglers. i like them, just i like my yj more. this is just the things i notice different between the two models

I feel that this thread has placed JKs equal to or above the YJs.

It out climbed you.

But i agree. I originally wanted a YJ more then anything, but i fell in love with my JK the second i saw it on the lot.

If i didnt want the 4-door with the cargo space so badly i would go straight to the YJ.

cristina said her next vehicle will be another wrangler so i think i will get her a two door jk in two years and then the four door will be mine and my yj will become my sons. actually though, we will swap back and forth depending on what we are doing because he likes the four door more but i don;t think i want to give him such a new vehicle as his first vehicle.

Yeah, of course he's going to want a newer jeep but there is nothing wrong with starting with a YJ. My 11 year old daughter has already said wants my JK when she starts to drive.

As much as I love my new JK, there are times when I miss my TJ. :(

I've had the CJ, TJ, and now the JK. Out of the three, I still miss the CJ. It was easy to work and mod. When there was a problem, it usually didn't take much effort to get to the area of issue. I ended up letting it go when the body rot got to a point outside of my 'expertise' and budget. So, yeah, simpler is sometimes better. The JK is the safest of the lot. I had all three on 35s and lifted, and the CJ7 would go up on two wheels a lot quicker. The TJ was pretty stable, bigger, but I felt as if the interior space was wrapping around me. The JK, like SuperJ said, does feel 'car-like' in the interior. I miss the simple flat dash of the CJ sometimes. I do love the JK, and I'll be on the lookout for a CJ on the side. My oldest will probably end up with a YJ or TJ. That depends on what his budget will be at the time he's ready.

i would with cristina's, hers is two wheel drive, ha ha ha
