clutch bleeding questions

blown XJ

New member
so i just replaced my slave cylinder and throwout bearing.on my 89 jeep xj with the ba10/5 transmission. i spent about 15 or 20 minutes bleeding the clutch last nite and i still have almost no clutch pressure at all.. this isnt the first clutch that i have bleed but it has never taken that long to not have pressure.. any helpful hints???

If you have a bleeder valve on the slave cylinder area, install a short vacuum line going to a half full glass jar with a clean fluid. Open the valve, top off the reservoir and slowly press the clutch pedal all the way down and slowly release all the way up. Make sure the vacuum line on the bleeder valve stays submerged into the clean fluid and the reservoir on the master cylinder stays full. Do this procedure 5 times and repeat as nescessary. Last week i worked on a 92 YJ that has no clutch pedal engagement at all to the slave cylinder. I topped off the master cylinder reservoir and pumped the bejesus out of the clutch pedal until it primed. No problem since. This may work as well but try the first one before you do this..Consider a possibility that your master cylinder is not creating the pressure needed to bleed the system.

another quick question. if the master cylinder doesnt make enough pressure to bleed the clutch then how would i bleed it??

You can't. If the prime on the master cylinder wouldn't create the pressure applied by the plunger, the master cylinder will need replacement. Internal leak would be the cause of that.

oh well it was working just fine before the throwout bearing went out so i believe it is still ok.. i will try the hose into a jar of brake fluid and see if that works.. i was just cracking the valve while someone else held the clutch down.

Little trick I do: Use a bicycle pump (add a tire valve to an old lid) to GENTLY push the fluid down and start the back pressure in the system so it will pump up!

thanks for all the advice.. i finally got it to build pressure last nite.. the fliud that was in the master cylinder was really dark and nasty looking so i went ahead and flushed it all out while i had everything hooked up.. thanks again
