I have a 72 CJ5 with a 304 and I just put in an OEM aftermarket clock and it kills my battery?? I had to wire it directly to the hot so it would have power all the time. I have been working on the jeep so it dont get driven much here lately. I charged the battery and three days later its dead again, is this normal?? Any help would be great on this. I wanted a clock so I put one in and its like a loaded .357 pointed at the battery.
HELP
Thanks

Hi-Ya warrior,

The analog OEM dash clock will eventually drain the battery of my CJ, but it takes much longer than three days.

By any chance, do you also have a radio installed with a preset memory which is also continuously drawing power? That will also drain the battery in time.

Perhaps when your Jeep is again being frequently driven, the problem will vanish.

I do have radio that has presets on it but it never drained the battery before until i put in this clock. I got it of ebay and like a dummy I drilled a hole for it in the dash, put it in and it did not work. So I emailed the people I got it from and they sent me another one and this time it worked. I hope once I start driving it again it will take care of it. I guess for now I will just keep putting the trickle charger on it from time to time. Its just one of those little things to piss a guy off.
Thanks for all the input.

Go to the battery section at Autozone and see if they still have those battery disconnect terminals. It's a terminal that has a knob on that you twist to make the circuit. You'll have to reset the clock every time but that's easier than the jumpstart.

Something else is wrong here. I have a clock and a radio with presets and they stay hot all the time. In fact, my Jeep has sat for 10 days before and cranked right up. I would route your "constant hot" accessories thru the fuse block. There should be some wiring that's constantly hot. If this is not an option, use a relay. That will decrease the amperage draw. The only other option is that your battery is shot and will not hold a charge, but if it was working before... i'd be suspect.

ps. you cannot use "OEM" and "aftermarket" to describe the same thing. I suppose you meant "OEM replacement".

Well my bad on the OEM thing....whoops! Anyway I am going to have to get a bigger battery, that I know. On my 72 there is no fuze box, I have it wired to the back of the headlight switch which is constant hot. If I can get some more info on a relay, like what size and such, I will try that. It would be a real pain to have to reset it everytime I get in it.

my luck has changed

If it's a beater, get one of those little stick up hockey puck lookin digital clocks. They cost like a buck and the mounting locations are endless

You could install an inline amp monitor. This allows the battery to only drain to a set amount and then cuts it off. This at least gives you starting power when you need it.

That dont sound bad, can you give me some info on what kind, where to get one. I am also getting ready to pull the winch off my 89 GMC and put it on my jeep so that might help all the way around. Let me know
Thanks

It says that it is a CJ OEM clock, the Ebay item number is 2450081907. I just got new battery cables today and I am getting a new battery this next week, a BIGGER one. I am going to be hooking up my winch this week so I hope with everything, this clock wont kill me again. If nothing else I am going to put a disconnect on the clock power wire till I start driving it again.
Thanks for all the help

Okay, you probably have a weak battery and it is not holding the charge anymore. Take it to Autozone and have them check it. If you are going to install a winch, I'm sure you will will the battery in no time. You could probably run that clock for a month or two without starting the Jeep with a good battery. Just disconnect the battery cables at the battery until you get it running again. I assure you that the clock is not the problem. -al

Sounds like your battery reserve was dwindled down to very little - a new battery will carry that clock much better, but since a winch is on the horizon, I would be privy to a SECOND battery as well - check the board from a week or so ago about "smoking alternators"
