If it is indeed a sticky lifter it may account for why it shows up more on cold starts. There are many solvents to add to you oil that may/may not help. The Murphy brand is pretty good as well as Gumout and Risolene.
I once saw a guy pour a small amount of transmission fluid into his carb while idle up his engine. It worked for the lifter, but the exaust put out a white cloud of smoke while the transmission fluid went through. Best bet-try one of the counter solvents. Murphy has a good selection of additives. Hope this helps....

I've heard of the transmission fluid fix too, but I heard it mixed 50/50 with kerosene (sp?) It is supposedly an old timer fix for starting up engines that have sat for years. I myself have never done it though.

I use Seafoam... It's 100% petroleum solvent. you can pick it up at just about any parts store around here (utah).. even Wal-Mart has it. Wait until it's about time to change your oil, put a whole can of it straight into your oil, and drive about 100 miles. Don't leave it in for over a week, as it tends to eat through rubber/gaskets if you leave it in for a while. After you've driven it for a good bit, change your oil. You will notice a difference. Either that, or replace your lifters : ) You can also use Seafoam straight down the throttle body... it will clean your valves, and cylinders out (Even though gasoline is a natural solvent) But, it will clean the engine out really well. You will see a pretty crazy white smoke coming out of the tailpipe if you do it like what was mentioned above with the ATF
