I am finally able to afford a CJ5 or 7 of my own. Is there a certain year(s) that are better than others...what years to avoid?

yes, the best ever made was a jeep, not a cj5-or7, but a willys overland cj2a, from 1946, thru 1948. that is if you want one thats allmost maintance free, and VERY easy to work on.......

go with a 83-86 CJ7, that means you will get wide track axles, a D300 transfercase, newer body and frame, and if you find one close to 86, you might score a D44 rear. + the CJ7 is a bit better offroad than the 5, because of the extra length.

Dnorton is right,

The CJ7 is the Jeep of choice. The '5 is 10" shorter and was the Jeep that had the rollover problems some years ago.

That extra 10" gave the Jeep much more stability and 10" of welcome storage behind the rear seat.

When me N my family load up for a trailride we are stuffed with people, tools, parts, lunch, cooler and such.

I just couldn't imagine trying to haul all that in a '5 or the beloved but even smaller '2.

Of course here in California it is agreed the most awsome Jeep with the best offroad ability is a CJ2 with a 350V8 and bullitproof drivetrain. It'll go where no other Jeep can go or fit.

But the main problem with the '2 is they are all at least 53 years old and parts are REAL hard to come by.

I agree with going with a '81 or later CJ-7 for all of the above reasons, plus you'll get a stronger frame and maybe a little less rust than you would on an older jeep.

Good Luck!

81 or newer CJ is the way to go. On the downside, these models (at least the 6 cyl version) have really bad carter carbs. If you don't have to do the smog thing, you'll want to get a replacement.
