CJ7 steering column replacement

So I am currently replacing the steering column in
83 cj7, but I ran into a problem. Everything measures up to the old steering column, but for some reason when I connect it to the rod under the hood, the bracket that holds it up near the steering wheel won't reach where he bolts go in. I have no idea why it won't reach no matter how much I tug on the column. Any ideas as to why I'm having this problem? I'll add pictures.

Can't see the pics either, but taking a stab at your problem, did you loosen the bolts on the bracket attached to the firewall? If it's the same as my cj I had to readjust both the firewall brace and the steering column bracket you are talking about. Just a guess.
