CJ-7 exhaust rebuild

Hey guys,

My friend that has a 78 CJ-7 has a question. Thanks for any help..

On a '78 with the 304 v8, installed headers with 3'' collector. Purchased a set of the below straight mufflers to run along the sideboard. Planning on connecting the muffler straight to the header. The inner diameter of the muffer end is 3''.

I'm trying to decide what size reducer to purchase and whether or not the reducer slides inside or around the end of the muffler. Thoughts?

Should be able to buy a piece of tubing that is flared and has the 3 bolt flange on it. Depending on the thickness, I guess you could use clamps. I recommend welding though.
BTW..I hope you like loud exhaust. My 78 was set up similar when I bought it years ago. It was loud and I smelled like exhaust after driving it. It also blows up dust on the trail. Mine had: Fenderwell headers, short 3" pipe to an unknown muffler on each side with another short tailpipe turned in an aerodynamic way toward the tire.
One of the best mods I ever did to the Jeep was to put factory manifolds back on and run in frame duals with dynomax mufflers out to the back bumper. It cut out all the dust and exhaust smell.

I understand the whole thing about wanting to do it himself even though he doesn't have a welder, but it wouldn't cost much at all to take it to a local machine shop and pay to have them TIG welded on. You'll have a hard time keeping those SS mufflers clamped tightly to any mild steel reducer/coupling that you buy.

instead of a machine shop just tow it over to a local muffler shop. They have years of experience routing exhaust pipe.. . welding up custom exhausts...and there cheaper than any old machine shop would charge...darn machinists...

Muffler shop. I had mine done at a muffler shop for basically the cost of the muffler. Back pipe extends beyond the body.

It is worth it!
