soon i will be taking my ac crap outof my yj. it is the type that bolts to the underside of the dash. my question is will i need to take this anywhere to be depressurized? someone told me that if i do this without depressurizing it first bad things will happen (he didnt know what!!!lol). and when i take out the compressor will i need new sized belts or anything like that? thanks

On board air! dont chuck it till you see what you need to turn the wimppie A/C in to real off road OBA. cool move though real jeepers don't need no A/C hehehehe TJers you know I am just kidding right "NOT" heheheeh Tug

Hi,

Yes, you MUST discharge the system PRIOR to removing or loosining any fittings. The A/C system is under high pressure (~ 100PSI). To make matters worse, refrigerants (R12, R134a) become super cold when allowed to expand (such as released into the atmosphere), and you can get frostbite or worse if it happens to meet your face on the way out of the system

Also, It is illegal to "vent" or release refrigerants into the atmosphere as they can damage the ozone.

So, I'd recommend taking to an authorized A/C shop for discharging. Should cost $30 or less. They can remove (properly dispose of) the refrigerant and oil in the system

where are you from ? I have recovery equipment in my van... If your close ill do it for free. Only takes 15 min, longer if its real cold.

Bring it on over to my house. I've got the equip. to depressurize that. I'll even help you remove that AC unit and you won't have to worry about finding a place to get rid of it, you can give it to me!!!

twistedcopper....i would do that but its going to be put on ebay to recoup some of the money that i have dumped into my money pit.
