Check your lugnuts guys!!!

Not sure how mine got loosened. Had extra lugnuts in my floorboard and I drove home with the only damage to my fender flare and waiting till tomorrow to decide on new studs, but you have been warned...
 

Looks like you've been mudding, did the flex perhaps cause them to loosen up? Don't know for sure here, but that was my first guess after looking at the picture. Good thing is that your fine and the Jeep only suffered some minor wounds. How fast were you going? Dang, gotta be a scarey moment right there.
 
Man, I've been there. When I first did my SOA I put aluminum rims on the jeep and they loosened right up on my first long drive. Went to take an exit and the wheel came off. Luckily the drum got caught on the back of the rim... the offset on my rim is pretty big so it hung on there until I stopped. Apparently you have to tighten new aluminum rims down every so often. Glad you're okay, could have been worse I guess.

Buy some LONG lug nut studs too, I did just in case.
 
Had an RX-7 that had a wheel come off. The wheel shot by me and went about 1/8 of a mile down the street before hitting a curb and landing in a tree. Sparks were shooting from the rear drum (I could see them in the rear view mirror). I was screaming like a little girl. Not a pleasent experiance.

Glad you are ok.
 

My cousin had the same thing happen, heading down the road in the western part of the state, think he stopped, and the wheel just kept right on going... Glad you're OK, that's a scary bit of business when your Jeep goes tripod.

I was driving with my cousin to go Christmas shopping, and I never noticed a vibration or anything the jeep just seemed a little loose. There was a loud pop from the rearend and I started slowing down and told my cousin I was gonna pull into a parking lot to make sure everything was ok. She said, "You think we have a flat?" right as I started to turn right into the lot and the backend dropped a foot. So I wasn't going fast and there was no traffic around me, or it could have been much worse. I did feel like an idiot chasing my tire down the road when some guy yelled, "Yeah that's a pretty important part there ya know!"

Yeah I have aluminum American Racing Outlaw II wheels, although they aren't new. The jeep has been sitting for over a month(bad transmission) while I was off at college, and when I got the new one in I did head out into the mud but didn't get on anything to flex the suspension out. Sometimes it happens I guess, everybody has come out with their horror story freak wheel accidents making mine seem quite docile.
 

In 2005 we installed a super 35 kit into my partners Jeep with an ARB.
A week after the install, we checked the torque on the locker, changed the fluid and headed down to Moab. The first day wheeling, we just came off of Hell's revenge, we headed over to Potato Salad Hill, after a few runs we was heading back into town when this happened.
We didn't carry spares lug nuts (at the time) so we stole from the other rims.
This could have been fatal to Tim while he was on either Potato Salad Hill or Hell's Revenge. We learned a valuable lesson that day to start checking our lug nuts monthly.

I now carry a 2 foot breaker bar with 19mm deep well socket attached all the time, two 5 packs of 1/2-13 long crown lug nuts that fit my rims, and I started checking my lug nuts monthly due to his mishap.
The cold and heat allows the aluminum to expand and contract faster than the steel of the drums and disc's, thus allowing the lug nuts to slightly loosen over time.
Heavy wheeling, over size tires and rims also heats up the breaking system faster as well.

ok.....I've had a few of my studs and lugnuts go bad on me. I'm now down to 3 on one wheel and 4 on two others. I'm not driving it at all though.

My question is are there different types of lugnuts for steel/aluminum rims? The stockers were aluminum and I put plain steel ones on.
