changing rear axle assembly

Welcome to Jeepz.com Denny. Are you trying to change out the entire rear axle, or just change out the gears in the rear axle?
I don't have experience with the Liberty, but on my Wrangler it's not too difficult, it's just intimidating. Everything is just bolt together.
Take a look at Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market - it looks like you can get a rear axle for somewhere between $250 - $1000 depending on your gearing.
