Carb Problems

I have an 87 Wranger that I bought about a year ago. It had a Weber carb in it when I bought it. In the last week or so it started idling high and sporatically stalling. Tried to adjust idle and mixture didnt help. Bought a rebuild kit and had a friend of mine who is more familiar with carbs do the rebuild. No luck or atleast not much better. I am guessing I need a new carb. Looking for suggestions on what might save me from having to do that or if I must where the best place(cheapest) to get a new one would be. Also should I go with a weber again? Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. :roll:

My first guess would be you have a vacuum leak. That will cause the high idle and possible stall due to lake of fuel in the air that sneaks in. Trying spraying some starting fluid around the base of the carb and see if the idle speed picks up. If is does you have a leak and look there to seal it. If it can't be fixed I would actually recomend Getting A motorcraft 2150 Carb. It much cheaper than a weber and actually works better. Not that Weber is but I just don't think they are worth the price. Weber is just the Magic of advertising. Search the Board for Motorcraft 2150 and you should find all the info you need. If not just ask.

i think that derff96963 is right on with the vacuum leak. check for hoses that are damaged/broken, old, brittle, cracked. check everything for cracks. spray some starting fluid around everywhere that there could be a vacuum leak. if the carb was working good, then stick with it, but i went from a weber to a motorcraft and was happier with the motorcraft. that is only because my weber ran like crap.

If the carb was rebuilt right then it should be like a new carb. I would look at other problems like the vacuum leak

I am not that familiar myself with the ins and outs of carbs. Frankly they intimdate me somewhat. From everything I have read here and else where I think I have decided to find a motorcraft. If anyone can point me in the right direction to pick one up ( preferably not from a salvage yard) I would appreciate it.
