Can my old 5 speed work with my new 4.0

Bear with me guys, I'm full of a lot of things but at the moment it's questions.
Bought this 2004 4.0 engine, trans & transfer case. My Wrangler is a 1989 with a 4.2 and a 5 speed. I'm not sure which trans it is but I recall Peugo being mentioned when I was buying a clutch for it a yrar ago or so.......
Anyway, my son wants to know if we can keep the standard shift or do we have to go to the auto that comes with the engine. OR am I nuts! If we go to the auto, will the standard shift gear ratio's in the rears work out or cause problems &
I'll have to find gears or rears down in the 3's (3.07 etc.)
Any Help or opinions are greatly apprechiated (I only graduated HS so don't comment on my spelling).

Contact Advance Adapters.Com Engine & Transmission Conversion Adapters as they will know if that transmission will work or not. The 5spd will not have the CPS provision on the bellhousing that you will need for the fuel injection on the '04 motor, so you would need a kit that puts the CPS sensor on the harmonic balancer.

There may be a difference in the pilot bushing as well, but an adapter bushing or custom machine work should work.

The bellhousing of your 5spd should bolt up the newer engine.

The auto will be a stronger transmission, and it's setup to work with the computer that controls the newer 4.0L engine.

Some people have decent luck with that Peugeot 5 speed, depending on their driving style, but it's really not up to any hard use behind a healthy inline six. The auto you have is a nice box though, and it should live a nice long life if serviced properly.

Thanks guys - like they say a zillion chinamen can't be wrong! I guess I'll use the 2004 auto trans & transfer case & hope my rear end gearing works out as well.
