Busted rear shock mount

RE: How to fit a big block into a YJ?

My passenger side rear shock mount at the axle has sheered off. Don't have pics but the mounts look like they are or have been pulled straight up by the shocks???
Both of the bottom mounts look this way.
I am just going to get the universal shock mounts that weld onto the axle to fix. But what could have caused this
I'll put pics on latter today

Thanks for the help

RE: Re: portland. or........can you hear me

Shocks are wrong....Measure your travel up and down of the shocks and measure how much room you have between the axle and the frame. You probably bottomed the shock out and had no choice but to break the mount or the shock....The shock won!!!

I've busted mine off both sides. I just welded them back together. I figure I bottomed it out too hard coming off a rock. I have the correct sized shocks for my lift but even with the correct size I could still stuff my tire hard enough into the wheel well to bust off the shock. This happened when I was running my 31's but now that I have 33" tires the axle won't go up as far before the tire stuffs into the wheel well. Haven't had any problems since I rewelded them and haven't broken any shocks.

Huh? What you talkin' bout Willis? If you're breaking shock mounts and it's not because you're ripping them off on trail obstacles, you have the wrong sized shocks for your setup.

Well, I'm a veteran cruiser!

I kinda figured that was what it was. i put a shackle lift (1inch) on about 4 or 5 months ago without replacing shocks. Got some rs5000's last night to put on after I put new mounts on.

This might be a stupid ? but should I worry about anything when welding to the axle. other than good alignment and possision of the new mounts and quality of the weld

Pic from the weekend...

Put the bolt and shock together with the mount and then position it into place. You can tack weld it in place then remove the shock so you don't melt the bushing. Then weld it in. You won't hurt anything inside the axle.

These were the correct sized shocks that my spring lift called for. I figure since I was supposed to be running 33" tires but instead was running 31's, the 31's allowed the axle to go up just far enough to bottom out the shock. Haven't had any problems since I switched to 33's because the tires now bottom out in the wheel well before the shock bottoms out.

happend to me too. I still run with only a right shock, havent had time to weld it on, nor have I dedided if thats the setup I want. been about a month now.

Ill get it one day!

I understand what you're saying Craig, and I'm not trying to argue with you, but.....that means you had the wrong shock size for your setup. You should have been running some extended bumpstops or different shocks with the 31s, now with the 33s your fenders are acting as the bumpstops.

Bumpstops, who needs bumpstops.....mine rusted off long ago. lol.
