Belt noise

Re: RE: just thought this was a weird pic?

my wife has a 2001 cherokee. as she was pulling away from my fathers house, he heard a noise which later that evening he told me sounded like it was "missing" or had a hole in the exhaust system. I checked it out and it seems when the jeep is at idle (in park) the belt around the alternator runs on and off then on again. when the belt is not turning, it gets rather noisy. any suggestions?

A. Loose belt
B. Loose tensioner
or
C. Worn belt

In all three of those cases I would go ahead and replace the belt, and make sure it is tightened properly

It is a serpentine belt, which does more than spin the alternator. I would highly reccomend repairing it before the vehicle is driven again.

Hard Door ?'s

think my 2001 is having similar probs. gets REAL squeaky at times..... that and it's starting to idle low. idk.

If you mean that at times the belt stops moving while the engine pulleys are spinning, then that is very bad. The serpentine belt drives the water pump, and alternator. It is important that these devices are functioning at all times when the engine is running
