Tug, is that a photo of the Great Smoky Mts? I recall you were somewhere in TN. I have a daughter in college in TN and I've visited several times.

Couldn't be a more beautiful place to drive a jeep with the top in the garage. Those rolling, tight curves - I can't wait until we visit again. Long drive for little bluebelle, though.

I know she'll make it easily - it's my butt that concerns me.

Nope we are not in the Smokies we are just in the Appalachians. I am in the Tri City area Johnson City and more close I am in Erwin Tn just down the hill from North Carolina. I am 90 miles north east of the Smokies greater Gattlinburg and Pegion Forge area. Small town here where most of the county is fed and state park land. We have many churchs and a few stores and a couple of bars. heheheh We have the Nolichuckey River running through here and it is one of the South East best White Water areas we are at the end of the george rafting area so we have several guide rafting services here. Small mouth fishing is great and trout fishing is great too. I am so blessed to get to live and work here. We have places like the devils looking glass, and in 1916 they hung an elephant by the neck til dead here. There were several things that happened here in the distant past that were both of pride and shame as most places. Just up river from the oldest town in Tennessee and a little further down stream is Davy Crockets birth place. These hill are old and lush with much timber and wild life. I have lived a bunch of places even 8.5 years in Alaska but no place comes close in my mind to here. You are all invited to come to visit. I may have to work part of the time but I will line you up to go and see a bunch of stuff and guide you out to the trails in my off time. You all come now you hear. Tug[addsig]

hey 4x4 , have you ever been across the cumberland gap. used to drive a truck years ago , often hauled coal from tenn. mnts. we used to go up 81 then cut across to middlesboro (not sure on the spelling ) cross the cumberland gap , went thru town up one of the most narrow crookedest roads known to man . used to drive a tractor trailer up there. but anyway there are some coal mines up there, one i remember was james spurr coal company. ......but you will end up over on 75 just north of knoxville the exit # was 117 or 147 was called racoon valley exit. if you have the time i would highly recomend ti for fall colors . just beautiful!!!!!!!!!!! dont drink the water thou most locals have it trucked in or buy it in town ...........just a thought...odax  [addsig]

Ah, Johnson City, Bristol and Kingsport - the tri city area. Wasn't Johnson City a stopping point/hideaway for Al Capone? Or so I've been told.

Didn't Al have a pet elephant?

Yup the whole Gangster Orginized Crime Gang hung out here in the day. Capone, Baby Face Nelson, Bonnie and Clyde, the whole dang gang were regulars in Johnson City at the Winsor Hotel. They called this Little Chicago in the day. As for the pet I am not to sure. This was a major stop for meetings and rest going from Chicago and New York to Florida. Tug[addsig]

Tug, you are so right!!! That has to be the most beautiful place I've ever lived also. I was stationed there for 3 years while in the Marines. I really do miss it some times. I just wished I'd had a jeep back then!!!![addsig]
