me and my dad just picked up a yj frame to build a new jeep with. were planning on building a trail only jeep, but we still want it to be a jeep, not too much weird body shaping and hacking you know. im trying rihgt now to figure out what kind of axles to put under it. older ford f 150's (82 and back i believe) had 9 inch rear ends and HP d44 fronts. that sounds like a good possibility to me but ive also contemplated a pair of d60s. if anyone has any good knowledge or advice to share please let me kno. we plan on running tires in the 37-39 inch range.
thanks

RE: windshield - self or shop?

Which front axle you use will depend on what Tcase you use. If you are staying with a drivers side drop case, then Ford is about the only fullsize front axle that will work. Dodge and Chevy both used passenger side drops.

In the rear, a 9" is okay for the tires you plan on using. In factory form, the 39s are going to twist it real fast if you're going to have any juice under the hood, but they can be built up to be very strong though.
If you are using fullsize axles.....you'll find out it is much easier and cheaper to just start with 1ton(or at least 3/4ton) stuff if big tires and big power or ultra-low gearing are in the plans.

my stock 31 spline 9inch had held up to my 39.5 tsl's all summer....mind you they are in mostly mud and trees and very few rocks.

however if i could do it again i would start out with a 14 bolt.
