axle questions

blown XJ

i have an 89 jeep xj 4.0 5 speed (ax15 i think) nv231 transfer case and dana 30 high pinion front and dana 35 rear axle. my question is will they live with 35 inch bfg mud tires in the mud??:?

Your Dana 30 will last for some time depending on how heavy your right foot is. The Dana 35 will snap an axel..its not a question of will it but when.
33"s are about the most a Dana 35 can handle, when you throw 35 inch tires on its too much for the small axel shafts.

A Super 35 kit will help but thats thowing good money at a bad axel, the outter tubes are thin and prone to bending, a axel truss will help this but yet again your throwing good money at a bad axel.
Dont get me wrong the super 35 kit is good, and with your life time replacment on broken axel shafts, its not a bad deal if you want to go this route.

But if your all bent on running 35's without the problem of axel failure I would look in to finding a junkyard Dana 44 (the cheapest) or spend some more and go eith a 8.8 or a ford 9 inch. If your plans down the road include a V-8...a Dana 60 would be a good investment.

Bah, just get rockwells, you'll be more than fine :D

A XJ 44 should be your first choice, you can find them to directly replace your 35.

Next I'd go for an 8.8 cuz they can be found with discs and are the correct width, correct bolt pattern, are stronger than 44's, and are easily found.

It will work if mud is all you do, mud isn't that hard on parts as there is little resistance. Throw in some all-around trail riding with some high traction or bouncing situations and you'll quickly find the limits of the D35.

Your jeep will be a dog with 35" tires and stock gears, so consider lower axlegears when you consider heavier axles. An 8.8 in the rear with a matching gear ratio in your D30 would work well.

thanks for the info what years should i look for the rear dana 44 for an xj??
