Hey guys, sorry its been so long since i posted. Just graduated, and started working, to i havent had much time. Its good to be back though.

Anyway, Im about to go crazy. I know ive only got a little 4 cylinder, but i dont feel like its making the power it should even for a stock engine. And its not really doing anything weird, other then crappy milage (even compared to other jeeps). So i was wondering if anyone had any ideas that might help. Im planning on new plugs, wires, cap and rotor next paycheck. Anything else i should try?

Put you a K&N filter in the orginal air box or add a conacal and a tube. Open up the exaust and let it breath with either a free flow cat and a Flowmaster or glaspack muffler. Loose the factory fan and put on an electric pusher fan in its place. This is a start but you can cam that puppy and or add a super charger if youreally want it to go. I had thought about the K&N filter, although im going to put it in the stock box, cuz that open filter just scares me with the thought of water.
Does the electric fan make a big difference? About how much would that set up cost?

Exhaust is probably a huge part of the problem, but cash is low, so i cant hardly justify replacing it till it falls off (wheres a tree stump when you need one? :-D )

A supercharger would be great, but again, no $

I to like the protection of the stock air box. As fro the exaust just drill out the cat and replace it that alone will make a big difference. The electric fan I have been told is a great mod and frees up a bunch of power. Do a quick search here are at jeepz and you can get a load of info on the fan conversion. Good luck and just learn to love the 2.5L tug[addsig]

Most def go with a K&N in the filter box. It is a cheap mod and does a fair job at power increasing. I put one in my 4.0L and love it. Plus u never need to buy a new air filter. You just have to clean it every now and again............[addsig]

the electric fan takes off all of the drag that the clutch fan was giving you... the K&N will help out a bit... a 4.0 throttle body will help... an inertia ring (weighted flywheel) will do a lot of good... plugs, cap, rotor, wires will probably help a bunch too[addsig]

whats this "inertia ring"?? ive heard of all the other things mentioned, but never that one. More details? Pros? Cons? Price?

Id also like some more details on the electric fans, such as whether or not the people that have them like them, or any negative things about them.

it is a ring of metal that is bolted to your flywheel to add "fake torque" to your motor... rather than increasing the torque of the motor, its mass will add momentum, and will keep everything spinning once it has started moving... do this... take a bicycle and flip it over... petal it, spinning the wheel... then with a glove, stop it with your hand.... now add some weight to the wheel... then do it... it is a LOT harder to stop it with the added mass moving[addsig]

After a couple of weeks out in the deep puddles around here, and having to replace the clutch on my fan, I have decided the next mod is going to be a fan conversion. The freed up HP + the benifet of being able to manually shut it off should the situation arise...as I check into it deeper, I'll forward all I find.

I'm not exactly sure where to buy one... but i'm sure you can measure the clearance from your flywheel to your block.. and have one machined for a better price than anyone can sell one to you... i've seen some writeups where some people ground their blocks to gain some extra clearance... a heavier ring makes more momentum...

side effects... your accelleration suffers a little.. because you have to get that mass moving... but once it is, IT IS... Isaac Newton told us well, he said something like "when its moving, IT'S MOVING" or something like that... your uphill and towing will be increased... startups will no longer be a herky jerky game, the clutch will catch the momentum of the flywheel instantly, the rpms won't drop as much... and if the motor happens to want to stall... let off the clutch, the mass will continue to spin and keep her going[addsig]

Just thinking out loud, but the way four bangers seem to work, is that they make peak horse and torque in a slightly higher range, than motors with more cylinders. The nature of off roading, usually means a lot of idle to open throttle operation. Opening up the breathing, of a four banger helps, as does as removing as much drag as possible (fan, accesories, extra wieght etc.). So they rev into the peak torque band a little faster.
Diesel motors (for trucks) generally have heavier fly wheels, but also usually have more gears. To keep the RPM`s up, in the peak torque band. Adding a heavier fly wheel, would add drag (when accelerating), but could possibly help, hold the engine RPM´s up when changing gears. Seems to make the best use of a wieghted flywheel, you´d have to be on the highway, ride the clutch a lot, to keep the RPM´s up or have a six speed transmission.
When I was a youngster and some of the guys where hot rodding four bangers, they would shave the flywheel, to help the motor rev, from idle up into the peak torque band, above 2000 RPM (usually around 2600 RPM). If you could keep the rev´s up above 2000, a wieghted flywheel might help you get over that muddy hill. Riding a trail, where you have to accelerate from idle to gear change over and over, it would just add drag.[addsig]

even if the motor is not spinning at its peak rpm... the ring will help keep the motor moving with the momentum... the acceleration will suffer... but we are not racing... we are looking to keep the motor moving[addsig]

Ok, all this "riding the clutch" stuff is fine and dandy, but im runnin' an automatic. So thats not much help. But anyway, i can see valid points on both your comments, but i think this is one mod im going to skip, at least for now.

i like my electric fan. on when i want it off when i want it like water crossings.didnt notice much power gain thought.but still worth the time.[addsig]
