wanted to get a tough durable counsle to lock my stuff in,but didnt want to spend 300 dollars for one. picked up this army ammo box for 30 dollars, and it fits perfect between the seats of my wrangler, just the right hight for an arm rest, was trying to figure out a way to modify it to be able to lock it up,thought about a pad lock but thats kinda tacky, figured i'd throw this out to the community and see if any one had some ideas, the top has the rubber gasket in it so it would be water proof with the lid tightly secured, had thought about putting a piano hinge on the back side of it,so as just to open it up from the front side where I would fix some kind of locking device. thanks.

Looking for something like this:

:)

You can't really tell from the photo, but I bolted one of the lid's handles to the box in the back so that it acted like a hinge. I then mounted a U bolt vertically on the other side so that when I closed the other handle it would stick through the slots in the handle.

It worked well. I put a tumbler lock on it, and would lock my Jeep keys in there when I went to the beach.

If you get this worked out, take a bunch of photos, I'd love to update that how to with some better ones.

This is what I ended up doing to my ammo box,for use as storage console. Went to the hardware store and got a lock that is used for drawers, had only 1/4" to play with between the box latch and the box,so this worked out well, removed the carry handle from the box and made a slot for the tongue of the lock to go into.after completeing that I flatened out the 90 degree angle at the back of the box so that the lid would open up completely and serve as a stop to keep the lid from falling all the way back. Then I brazed the back latch into place. Next step, paint and install, thats next weekends project.

i bought some of the standard ones and hten some thinner ones of the standard height because i noticed a guy local was selling them. he has a garage full and says he buys them from the drmo and sells them on ebay. anyways, they are all good and have hte gasket also so i need to find something to do with them too. i was going to put one on each side in the back for the kids and one in the center for the tools

Not sure but I think the thinner ones fit well in-between the door and the chair in the front drivers and passenger side doors

Tell me how it works out.
