AMC 304 in a YJ

RE: Great Vid.. its a flying ...?? Lawn..?? what?

Yes. If the engine mounts are questionable, go ahead and buy a set made for the V8. I'm not sure what type of frame bracket they used on the early YJ. If it's like those on a CJ, you're golden.

It actually makes me happy to hear you're thinking about this. Not enough Jeep guys run the AMC stuff. It almost makes me want to drive up and help you with it. I haven't done the swap into a YJ yet(although it's coming  ) but I'll try to help any way I can.

I like the idea. I say go for it. Leave it on 30's for a while and that jeep will haul some serious......well, you know what I mean.

If you haven't got one yet, I'd suggest looking for a 360 first. They came in Wagoneers all the way up until they quit making them in 90 or 91, so they are easy to find. I've got a built 304 that I love, but if I had gone with a 360 block and ran the same combo as I have in my 304 it would make more power, be more driveable, and get about the same mileage. The 304 is great though if you get it for a deal. I've got a 401 that will go in a YJ someday probably, unless I get my hands on a CJ8, Javelin, or AMX, or I blow up the 304 before then.......okay, actually it will probably never make it to a YJ, but I like to dream.

I like the way you think. That 401 would go real good in a scrambler!

I'll keep thet in mind (about the 360). I've been thinking about a chevy 350 swap, but I started thinking it might be cool and less expensive to go with an AMC. I know my BA10 transmission is a POS, but I'll run it till it breaks then look for a good replacement. Maybe I'll just keep my eyer open for one and if I find a good deal I'll just hang on to it until the Peugeot takes a dive.

Junk - What do you mean, by "combo"? Are you talking about trans/axle combo or engine internals. I'm interested in what you built the 304 with. My body should be done soon and the next step is working the 360.

TC - I've only driven a couple 258s, but I have to say the stock 360 (from a wagoneer) that's in my CJ is a hoot!

Thanks,

Zipper Problems

PhattyX-- Yes, I meant the engine combo. Now that I think about it though, the 360 would work better with my current drivetrain too. I'm running 360 heads and a pretty good size cam for a 304. The bigger bore of the 360 would let it breathe better. The same size camshaft will seem more radical the smaller the engine is that you put it in. My camshaft makes my 304 sound like a dragcar, but the same cam in a 401 would be alot more tame.....and therefore be more driveable, less "peaky", and make more vacuum.

I can PM you the specifics if you want them, but it's basically built around a set of shaved and ported 360 heads and a Comp Cams valvetrain using a Magnum 280H camshaft.

Me and a buddy of mine are going in on a rusted out 84 Wagoneer this weekend for $100. We're going to get it Saturday. He gets the interior, all the trim, and the Tcase......I'm getting the 360, TF727, and the axles. It runs fine. I might have a 360 between the fenders soon.
