Air intake... Can I just put a cone filter on?

Let's say I removed my stock air box and added a cone filter to fit the end of my stock air intake hose, would this give me the same results as buying an expensive intake system? Any comments? Suggestions?

Thanks!!! [addsig]

doesn't sound like it wouldn't work. when it came to air filters...the thugs in my town that hang around 7-11 rigged up some interesting things. i see no reason for it not working. just might not work as well..but who knows[addsig]

Do I need to extend my existing hose to have the filter closer to the origianl air-box location? Or would it be OK a bit closer to the engine?

Thanks again!

it would be better if it was in the stock location, because there is a fresh source of air coming in at that point through the airbox intake tube. But it won't be enough of a difference to worry about. Basically, don't point the tube toward the engine, and you'll get much better results than the stock airbox[addsig]

One more question about this situation... What about getting an air filter to fit directly on top of the throttle body? Any problems with this? Maybe too much warm air? I am really interested in this topic because I do not see spending so much money on an air tube when ther might be other alternatives.

Thanks again and again! :) [addsig]

yeah.. i think that would work.. but then you will be pulling in from right on the engine, and i think the end of the cone would be quite close to the hood, not getting much space to pull air from there... if you get a piece of pipe, and connect your stock tube to the filter, that would work quite well[addsig]

I know! I know! I said that would be the last question before! Oh well. Anyways... What size filter would be recommended to be put on the end of the hose? What brand? I see K&N has the 6x9 and Powerstack has 5,6,7,8" and up. Which would be better? Thanks again![addsig]

The larger, the better, as long as it fits without being in the way too much. I've seen them bolted directly on the TB, but when idling/crawling, very warm air rises from the exhaust manifold. Better to pull from the other side of the engine.[addsig]
