aftermarket gas guage sending unit question

I have the 20 galtank found in YJs. Has the sending unit, however I dont have the YJ its a CJ guage which is crap.
I did a CJ dash conversion and want to use an after market gas guage.

Does anyone know of an aftmkt guage & sending unit combo that will fit the YJs rectangular fuel tank cover?

Many of the ones Ive found have the round cover - which wont fit the YJ

Beats me, I figured most aftermarket guages could be made to work with most OEM sending units.

If you find one, let me know. I've gone through 2 sending units and my current one is shot. I asked at a place that specializes in strictly jeeps and they say it's a very common problem for the YJ sending unit to go bad after taking it off road. The guy told me to just give up replacing it if I'm taking it off road and go by mileage instead. I've also been searching around for an aftermarket one.

Well they prob is not so much the YJ sending unit - it does work. Only with the YJ VDO gas guage. I now have a CJ dash, ( The Jeep is an 87 YJ ) and when I get around to it it will be a custom alum. dash. I have all aftermarket guages except the speedo (CJ) and the gas guage. The reason the YJ and CJ guages dont mix is because of the different measures of resistance values sent to the guage.. Ive never read them, but I know it to be true. Ive heard they are opposites, but reversing the wires at the sending unit supposedly doesnt work.


I plan on dumping the CJ Speedo when I replace the CJ dash and getting something - that matches. I went with sunpro whitefaced guages.(cheep and they do the trick). They have a gasguage in that line, but the sending unt is designed to be mounted on a fuel cell, not some factory gas tank...

Not exactly sure. I was too lazy to pull it out myself so I had my buddy do it at his shop. If I remember correctly, something happens to the float everytime I take it off road.
