Have you checked the master cylinder reservoir for fluid level? My old Toyota used to be that way due to a leak in the master cylinder. If the fluid is low, I'd have to pump it a few times to get the clutch to disengage enough to shift gears. Of course, low fluid level is generally indicative of a leak somewhere. Like I said, mine was in the master cylinder, but it could be at any point between there and the transmission. Have you looked at all the hoses and connections? Do you see any fluids on the ground or on the vehicle where there shouldn't otta be any?

It's located right behind the master cylinder for the brakes, in the left hand (driver's side) rear of the engine compartment:
Mine's a '94 YJ, and the little lid you can see behind the master cylinder actually says "CLUTCH" on it....pretty darn helpful for folks like me. It's a pretty tight area back there, but try to trace the hoses from the bottom of that down to the clutch to see if there are any leaks. I guess before doing that, pop the lid off and see if there's the proper level of fluid in it. I'm guessing it's low from the symptoms you're describing, rather than it being a clutch problem. Let me know what you find out.

Could also be bad synchronizers and you having to 'double clutch' moreso than just having to pump the clutch pedal. Make sure you're running a good gear oil in the transmission, no Mobil1 or other corrosive GL5 gear oil like the owner's manual incorrectly recommends. Use Redline MT90 and you're shifting will improve ten-fold.

You know The more I'm on this site the more I find out that I'm blind. Oh well livin is learnin
But opened it up and It was down about 1.5" to 2" from the top. I didn't see any markers that said full or add. where is the level supposed to be.
I also fond a little bit of oil on the to of the vacum bottle, at least i think that is what that is. again learin.

You could be looking at replaceing the slave cylinder if you find you are consistanly losing clutch fluid. Fortunately they are external (outside of the transmission) on your 95 YJ. The earlier years (not sure exactly when the switch was made) had internal ones.
Even if it is your slave, you should change the transmission fluid as Bounty suggested. Any place other than a dealer will install the incorrect GL-5 fluid which will eventually be fatal to your transmission. Haynes, chiltons, and even factory service manuals have the fluid listed incorrectly as GL-5. A dealer will install GL-3, which you'll be hard pressed to find anywhere.
There ought to be a sticky on that subject. Might save several Aisan Warner trannies

Fill it so it's about 1/2" from the top. Go pump the clutch a few times (real slowly so it won't spray out all over the place). Check the level again and fill it back up to the same level if it is down. Then go drive it and see if it's better.

When I bought my wrangler, 2nd gear was almost impossible to shift into without grinding it, as the syncro is obviousy severely worn. Changing to synthetic oil slowly but surely lessened the problem, and 2nd gear has been almost as good as the rest since then :mrgreen:

I agree with a few mentioned repsonses... Better oil will make tremendous difference. Give it a try.
does the clutch feel soft? does it rebound all the way to the top? if it is not soft, and returns all the way, it might not be a clutch fluid issue. but do'nt rule that out. Watch your level, if it diminishes often, you found it, but have to find the direct source. Otherwise, there are a few options for better gear oil

XJNick, thanks for the info. I've always shied away from the synthetic stuff, I guess because my dad did. He was a heavy mechanic, worked on diesel and gas tractors, combines, swathers, etc., and back when he was doing that the synthetic stuff was new, and not very good at all. I know they've made a lot of changes since then (mid to late 70's), but I've still been hesitant to use any of it. Not that I really care about the environment that much, but I've often seen it cheaper on the pocketbook, so I might try using it now.

The clutch dosn't feel soft and it does rebond all the way. But I have to put it to the floor in the morning to get into gear. Then after driving it awhile the clutch will engage about half way to 3/4 of the way down. i havn't had a chance to fill with fluid yet been out of town for work and won't get to it till Sunday night. but after i i fill it up with fluid will post changes.
What kind of fluid do I want to get. Brand, wait ect..

I wondered how long it would take for someone to jump on that! :lol: Yes, I do care about the environment, just not a total tree-hugger like some. I take my waste oil to a properly licensed facility, try to recycle when I can, and don't go crashing through restricted environmental areas in my Jeep.
Back on topic: Happy, I'm most likely totally wrong on this, but I think I remember using brake fluid in my Toyota clutch......that doesn't sound right at all, but I'm pretty sure that's what I used........someone else wanna set me straight on that? It's been a few years......
